Below we will explain the meaning of HUB and HUB functions on computer networks. In building or creating a computer network, many different components are connected to each other. These components work in accordance with their function so that there is a communication line between computers, laptops, printers and other devices. After the formation of a computer network, each device and of course will provide many benefits to support one's work so that it is easier, faster and more efficient.
What is HUB?
The hub is a network device that works at OSI layer 1, the Physical Layer. So that the Hub only works no more as a connector or concentrator, and only amplifies the signal on the Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) cable. Hub does not know MAC Addressing or Physical Addressing so that it cannot sort out the data that must be transmitted so that collisions cannot be avoided from using the Hub.
Hub functions include:
- Facilitate additional removal or addition of workstations.
- Increase network distance (can function as a repeater).
- Provides / facilitates flexibility by supporting different interfaces (Ethernet, Toket ring and FDDI)
- Offers feature features that are fault tolerance.
- Provide centralized management (information collection, diagnostic).
Division of HUB Types
Basically, HUB is divided into two types, namely active HUB and passive HUB.
- The definition of an active HUB is a HUB that has the ability to amplify a signal or commonly referred to as a repeater. This type of HUB is able to regenerate an incoming signal from a computer which is then transmitted back to another computer. An active HUB will be very useful for connecting two or more computers over a long distance.
- The definition of a passive HUB is a HUB which is only tasked with sharing the transmission signal that goes to the connected computer port. By using the Passive HUB it is possible to add a computer unit connected with the condition that the computer unit is not too far apart.
- Classified as Layer 1 equipment in the OSI model (Physical layer).
- Cannot read packets of data.
- Unable to know the source and destination of the data.
- Only the role of receiving and forwarding incoming data to all equipment on the network, including those that send data.
Note:
Data speed on the HUB depends on the number of devices or computers plugged into the ports on the HUB, so that many computer network users leave the HUB and replace with a switch. What is a SWITCH on a computer network we will discuss in the next JavaNetMedia article.
