A proxy is a server that provides a service to forward every user request to another server on the internet. Proxy Server is placed between the client application and the server application, can be used to control or monitor data packet traffic that passes through it.
How the Proxy Works, namely when the user uses a proxy, the user asks for files or data contained on the public server (internet) then the proxy will forward it to the internet so that it seems as if the proxy asked for it. And when the proxy server has got what the user asked for, the proxy will respond to the user as if he is the public server.
Benefits of a Proxy
In general, the benefits of a proxy server are as follows:
1. Improve network performance
With the proxy server's ability to store request data from the client application, the same request as the previous request will only be retrieved from the proxy server store. If an internet user has visited the same site before, it is not necessary to connect directly to the source site, but simply retrieve it from the proxy server deposit. In this way, the direct connection to the source server can be reduced. Thus, the use of internet bandwidth for direct connections is reduced.
2. Filter requests
A proxy server can also be used as a filter for data requests from a site. In this case, the proxy server becomes a filter against sites that may or may not be visited. In addition, the proxy server can also be used as a filter against client applications that can use access to the internet. In this case the proxy server acts as a filter against internet interference.
The three main functions of a proxy server are:
1. Connection sharing
Acting as a gateway that becomes the boundary between the local network and the outside network. The gateway also acts as a point where a number of connections from local users will be connected to it and outside network connections are also connected to it. Thus the connection from the local network to the internet will use the connection that is owned by the gateway together (connecion sharing).
2. Filtering
Works on the application screen so that it functions as a packet filtering Firewalll which is used to protect the local network against interference or attacks from outside networks. Can be configured to reject certain websites at certain times.
3. Caching
Proxy Server has a mechanism for storing objects that have been requested from servers on the internet. The caching mechanism will store the objects the user requests that get from the Internet.
